The Ferrari Challenge series is a single-marque racing championship, that was created so that Ferrari owners could become involved in motor racing. It started in 1993 with the 348 Challenge and then progressed to the F355 Challenge in 1995. Each one of these started out as a standard Berlinetta (coupe), which was then modified with a factory supplied kit of performance accessories (at an additional cost to the customer of some $30,000!!). However, the next car in the Challenge series, the 360 Challenge (and also every subsequent Challenge car) was only available with the F1 paddle shift transmission, a move bemoaned by many racing purists and one that has therefore only heightened the appeal and demand for the F355 version. Thrilling to drive on the track and easily maintained, with no complicated computer controls or electronic shifting, these superb, factory built racecars are destined to be one of the most sought after racing machines from Maranello.

This particular 355 was campaigned extensively (and very successfully) in the North American Challenge Series, from 1997 to 2000. With many first places across the country, throughout its career, it was actually 1st overall, in the 2000 season!

What makes this car even more special however, is the fact that it is titled for road use. A total of just 108 F355 Challenge cars were built (18 of which were right hand drive), making them extremely rare, but finding a road legal example, with a US title, is far rarer still (possibly, one of only two such cars in the US and one of only ten worldwide).

This therefore, represents an unparalleled opportunity to purchase not only one of the rarest examples of the last manual transmission, Ferrari Challenge cars, but also a championship-winning one with a superb racing history!

his example of a Michelotto F430 GT2 has undergone a full overhaul at the factory following its celebrated racing career. This F430 was entered and won 1st place at the Boughton House Ferrari Owners Club Concours Event. Luca de Montezemelo (CEO of Ferrari at the time) commented on how he believed this to be the best condition Ferrari 430 GT2 in existence.

This vehicle has had an extensive and successful racing career with many podium finishes in the Le Mans Series, but most importantly it entered and finished the 24 hours of Le Mans. The drivers through its life include Antonio Garcia, Leo Mansell and Jamie Melo.

The superb condition and provenance of this vehicle would make it a fine addition to a car Collection.

Ferrari has always had racing at the heart of its purpose and being as a manufacturer. The road cars were simply sold to fund the racing cars in Scuderia Ferrari’s efforts in capturing F1 championships as well as other championships across the motorsports world. Since 1948 Ferrari has always seemed to build a racecar, then a road car variant for mass production. All the way up through 1969 Ferrari tended to build what they thought the public liked, mostly GT cars of different variants with only mid-engine cars dedicated to the track. When Fiat became a major influence with ownership interest in 1969, a more cohesive plan became evident as a more defined model line up began to evolve. The Dino, in many ways, was genesis for what was to become the platform for a sales evolution for Ferrari. On to the 308, then 328 and production numbers were soaring.

It was the culmination of racing, road cars, and customer interest that became the fundamentals and recipe for the Ferrari Challenge Series. A brilliant marketing effort but also a research and development effort to continually improve upon the platforms for the mid-engine flagships that began to define the company’s financial status and buyer base. 1993 marked the inaugural start of the Ferrari Challenge Series with the 348 Challenge Series, though limited to Europe for the first calendar season. Then debuting in the US with the 355 Challenge Series, onto the 360, 430, and today the 458 Challenge series, soon to be replaced by the 488 Challenge Series. As such, a limited amount of cars for each series have been built. For instance, an approximate 142 units were built for the 430 Challenge Series with many of them being raced hard, wrecked, written off, and/or modified for post challenge racing. It is a circumstance that allows for those cars that have not been used and are still as delivered, to be considered a rarity and thus valuable to anyone with a stable full of horses. A Ferrari factory race-car that is still nearly new and representative of that models perfection on the race track will become more and more rare as the years go on.

This brings us to the example on offer. A 2006 Ferrari 430 Challenge, Chassis # 145769 fitted with its original engine, numbered 101685. This particular example is believed to have been produced in February of 2006 with the Ferrari MSO present and stating a 3/9/2006 date. It was distributed/imported when new by Barchetta Red, Inc. of Glen Cove, NY. While exact history is not fully known, we know that the car has seen very little use and was likely either a back up car or practice car on occasion. The ownership chain seems to be that it was sold from Barchetta Red, Inc. through Ferrari of Long Island in February of 2007 to a Robert Fata, and then shortly after to Pugliese Motorsports, Inc. From there the history is not fully know before appearing again in a prominent South Florida Collection and then onto LBI Limited via a current 458 Challenge race team who briefly owned the car. Mileage shows to only be about 2,500 from new and overall the car exemplifies that of a very low use car still retaining its original paint, interior, equipment from the factory (such as jacking system, wash bag, pins, releases, and radio equipment) and overall a well preserved example.

Cosmetically, the car shows as expected for 2,500 miles of track time. There are a variety of blemishes up front on the hood and bumper, the rockers show peppering just behind the front and rear wheels, and there are some blemishes to be found on the wheels and a few other places. However, compared to the other 141 430 Challenge cars in existence, this is likely the cleanest and newest example extant. For certain it retains its original paint per our paint meter readings and inspection. It appears to have never been in any accidents at all, a seemingly inevitable event when racing. All of the emblems and factory exterior equipment specific to a 430 Challenge are all present and original. In total, the exterior cosmetic condition reflects the mileage from track use but excludes any conclusions as to abuse or cosmetic work ever needing to be performed.

The interior is of the same consistency with factory seats still in place, absolutely no modifications of any kind beyond some timing equipment and a GoPro mount. The door panels, dash, instrument cluster, steering wheel, seat belts, roll cage etc… is all Factory Ferrari from new to the best of our knowledge. There is consistent wear considering the use but by far it likely presents much better than most track worn 430 Challenge cars. Granted these cars are for pushing the limits of performance and there use defines their desirability in most cases. However, it is an extreme rarity to see one with little-to-no use and as such the preserved nature of the car should be valued accordingly.

Mechanically, the car is spot on having just received a proper inspection and annual service by Exotic Motorcars Midwest, which included a total fluids and filters change as well as an inspection of all systems. The car has had approximately 50 miles of track time since for photography and videography but has been started regularly since April of 2016. There are no known mechanical faults with the car and all systems are in correct working order. 430’s in general are very “bullet-proof” cars, and with the Challenge car nearly identical to a 430 Scuderia (mechanically) it makes for ease of service and care. The car starts instantly and once warm revs freely to redline. It pulls strong, shifts with precision, and is very exhilarating to drive from every aspect. While this example is ideal as an investment grade example it should be noted that if track use is desired, a new set of tires and racing belts should be considered to call it up-to-date for any outing.

While the Ferrari Challenge Series is a seemingly contemporary aspect of customer experience for Ferrari Owners, it is quickly becoming a legacy of Ferrari’s effort to satisfy the clients urge to go faster in the best of the best. That said, as the years go on, the Ferrari Challenge cars will inevitably remain in their own category of performance, intrigue, and collectability. Those cars fortunate enough to have been well preserved, such as the one on offer, will become rarities. Ultimately propelling their value upward as a piece of Ferrari history and the ultimate of variant of the Ferrari 430. Offered with the sale is a recent service receipt, original Ferrari MSO (very rare), and a recent Platinum Award from The Reading Ferrari Concours 2016.

360 Modena Challenge History Based on the 360 Modena road car, the 360MC (Modena Challenge) was an extensively reworked, non road legal car intended to compete in Ferrari’s one-make racing series called the ‘Ferrari Challenge’. It was only available with the F1 gearbox. At the time of launch, Ferrari claimed the 360MC accelerated from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds (0.6 secs quicker than the standard 360 Modena F1) and could corner and brake significantly faster than the road car. The 360MC featured a stripped-down race-car interior with the stereo, electric windows and locks, soundproofing, airbags, air-conditioning, and even the handbrake removed. The seats and restraints were replaced by a single carbon fiber racing seat and FIA approved restraint harnesses, and a roll cage was fitted for safety along with a fire suppression system. The instrument cluster was reworked with a monochrome LCD to display vital engine data. The adaptive suspension of the road car was replaced by adjustable racing dampers, while larger brakes with extra cooling ducts were added.

Driven by Marco Petrini in 2005 at Mugello F1
Driven by Christian Overgaard in 2006 at Knutstorp Raceway

Based on the 360 Modena road car, the 360MC (Modena Challenge) was an extensively reworked, non road legal car intended to compete in Ferrari’s one-make racing series called the ‘Ferrari Challenge’. It was only available with the F1 gearbox. At the time of launch, Ferrari claimed the 360MC accelerated from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds (0.6 secs quicker than the standard 360 Modena F1) and could corner and brake significantly faster than the road car. Brembo racing provided the upgraded Gold colored calipers and larger floating 2-piece discs, while Bosch provided race tuned ABS software. The exhaust system was lightened substantially and was one of the main contributions to the increased hp over stock engine (as ignition mapping was claimed to virtually the same). For the road cars (even the Challenge Stradale) Ferrari used a valve system which made the car more socially acceptable at lower revs (and therefore able to pass drive-by noise tests).

Unlike the previous Challenge car series, which utilized a F355 road car with a dealer-installed ‘challenge upgrade’ kit, the 360 MC was a factory built track car, which allowed greater weight reduction efforts. The enhanced driving characteristics and substantial weight reduction meant the car could comfortably outperform its road-going counterpart even though power from the 3.6 engine was claimed to be similar.

This 2013 Ferrari 458 Challenge was raced with considerable success by Rinaldi Racing of Germany. Rinaldi Racing owner Michele Rinaldi has long been respected in European racing circles as an expert Porsche tuner and restoration specialist, but when he saw the quality of Ferrari’s support for its racing customers, he decided to field this car, which wore number 457, and another 458 Challenge in the VLN (Veranstaltergemeinschaft Langstreckenpokal Nürburgring) Endurance Championship, a series of 10 races held at the Nürburgring’s Nordschlief (North Loop) circuit, and in the European Blancpain racing series, all under the GT Corse banner and often with Rockstar Energy Drink sponsorship.

While the standard and Challenge versions of the 458 share the same chassis and driveline, the 458 Challenge is in fact an all-out race car designed and built to compete in the Ferrari Challenge. To prepare the already-incredible 458 for competition, Ferrari engineers first commenced an aggressive weight-reduction program, reducing the thickness of the aluminum body panels and replacing other pieces with carbon fiber; the windows, including the windshield, are Lexan.

The suspension was completely overhauled to meet the demands of serious track use. The ride height was lowered 2 inches all around and mechanical grip enhanced by using solid aluminum bushings, stiffer springs with special high-rate shock absorbers and 19-inch center-lock forged alloy wheels with Pirelli racing slicks. Those changes combine with aggressive camber specifications to produce tremendous grip—1.6 lateral Gs, to be exact, and with the added benefit of very light steering feel. Braking is another strong suit of the 458 Challenge thanks to upgraded Brembo carbon ceramic rotors and pads and advanced ABS. The 458’s soul-stirring 180-degree 4.5L V-8 engine, the first in a mid-engine Ferrari road car to use direct fuel injection, retains its factory specification of 570 HP at 9,000 RPM. The lone modification is a new exhaust system that adds even more auditory beauty to the V-8’s lovely howl. The smooth-shifting, automated dual-clutch 7-speed F1 gearbox is also standard fare, but the ratios have been changed to better suit the 458 Challenge’s racing mission.

The 458 Challenge also employs the production 458’s E-Diff electronic differential, a first for Ferrari track cars. Another first is the F1-Trac traction-control system, the most advanced of its kind, offering three calibrations—full, partial and off—developed from Ferrari’s F1 and GT programs. The F1-Trac is completely integrated with the E-Diff to guarantee maximum acceleration out of corners. The Challenge’s cockpit trades the comfort of hand-stitched leather for purposeful racing buckets with 6-point harnesses. Driver controls are minimal but complete: a digital rev counter, warning lights and paddle shifters on the padded competition steering wheel.

Fitted for the VLN series with a special GT3 aero package comprising carbon-fiber front splitter and rear spoiler, wheel flares and front bonnet, this Rinaldi Racing 458 first competed in the Le Mans Challenge race in 2012 and went on to race in the 2013 and 2014 VLN series at the Nürburgring. Driven there by Andrea Barlesi, Mike Jager and Stephan Kohler, the car finished 2nd in the SP8 class on July 5, 2014 and then took the pole on August 23, finishing 3rd in class.

Offered with approximately 6,400 kilometers on the engine and gearbox, this well-known 458 Challenge racer from Germany’s only international Ferrari GT team qualifies for the North American Ferrari Challenge Series and several other “gentleman’s racing” series across the continent and around the world.

* Originally purchased by ESM Patron for use in the 2012 Grand-Am Rolex series as a model year 2011 chassis.
* In 2012 ESM Patron raced the car in GrandAm at Daytona 24, Laguna Seca and Watkins Glen 6 Hour (I drove it at Laguna Seca and Watkins Glen w/ Johannes van Overbeek and Guy Cosmo).
* In 2013 ESM Patron raced the car in GrandAm at Daytona 24, COTA, Laguna Seca, and Watkins Glen 6 Hour (I drove it in all those races).
* In 2014 ESM Patron operated the car on behalf of SMP who entered the car at the 24 Hours of Daytona and finished 4th.
* After the 2014 Daytona 24 Hour it was upgraded to full FIA GT3 specification and completely refreshed by ESM.
* I bought the car from ESM Patron for use in the 2014 Pirelli World Challenge series.

* I raced the car in various Pirelli World Challenge events during the 2014 and 2015 seasons in with Scuderia Corsa. A best finish of 4th in GT at Sonoma in 2014 (I never entered GTA until the last 2 races of 2015… I think I’d have won most of the other races I entered had I opted into the GTA class. )
* Lots of spares from the endurance racing including a *complete* spare gear box and both homologated endurance and sprint brake packages.
* Grand-Am spec rollcage which has the high NASCAR style door bars and thicker tubing, personally I find it *much* safer than the standard cage.
* Driver adjustable anti-roll bars front and rear.
* Hours on the car are relatively low as I’ve just done the sprint races with Pirelli World Challenge and a couple test days on the car. I could have ran it the entire 2016 PWC season without refreshing motor or gearbox…
* Includes all the driver cooling mods by Scuderia Corsa — solid state helmet blower and cool suit system, aux fans to blow air at driver, push button driver hydration system, etc.
* Chassis has NEVER had a big hit. Roughest race was 2015 at Long Beach and it was all cosmetic (hey, I made up 10 positions in 3 green flag laps…. ) and resulted in new body panels and fenders on the car.
* I’ll include data from myself with the car at any tracks the new owner may run it. I’ll also come out and spend a day getting you up to speed in the car if it’s on the west coast or coincides with another race weekend I’ll be attending.
* Updated Michelotto traction control software as of October 2015.

This 2011 458 challenge car, serial number 177700, served as one of the back up cars for my main collector. It is coming from the same collection as the 599GTO I sold not that long ago, along with the Tailor Made F12 that we just sold. The car has seen only a few races and has been very well taken care of.

It comes with the new seat, a cool suit system, a second seat, the evo kit installed, and a fresh service. There are less than 10 hours on the brand new set of injectors in the car. The car is ready to race or track tomorrow.

2004 360 GT s/n 2040. This is the LAST car of the 20 cars built by Michelotto in the 360 GT Series(s/n 2002 thru s/n 2040). Being the last Evolution of this model and predecessor to the 360 GTC Series this individual car has the Magnete Marelli Injection giving it 475 hp as opposed to 445 hp in the other cars of this Series. Also as the last Evolution of this model the all-alloy chasis and body weight was reduced from 2420lbs down to 2310lbs. Additional upgrades in this last Evolution include a Marelli Ignition System, adjustable brake system(front and rear), upgraded carbon-fiber rear wing , upgraded electronic traction control, the first car to have Michelotto’s sequential gearbox(€60000) and the upgraded exhaust manifold(ALL these upgrades became standard in the 360 GTC Series). With its massive Brembo brakes and carbon-fiber body panels, the 360 GT was the weapon of choice to compete in the FIA N-GT series and the American Le Mans and Rolex Grand-Am series.
